PBI in the Social Studies Classroom
The PBI model is an approach to content that allows students to incorporate rigor and relevance into practice. By giving the students the freedom to choose compelling questions that interest them, and the direction necessary, content becomes relevant because they are interested in their topics. Students learn when they are engaged, and having students investigate their interesting and compelling questions, and giving them the opportunity to showcase their work gives them a sense of pride and engagement. The PBI model, and inquiry in general, have been a focal point of the program, specifically for secondary social studies in ECI 524, 525, 546, 727. Below are examples of PBI used in core classes of the NLGL Secondary Social Studies program.
