Teacher Leadership in Relation to Maximizing Content Relevance
While some would focus on the teacher knowing their students as means to maximize content relevance, and they would not be wrong, it is impossible to ignore the value of collaboration in professional learning teams and the value of teacher leadership in making content relevant. Being a teacher leader gives a teacher the opportunity to make content relevant not only for their own students, but for the school as a whole, and potentially the school system. Two heads are better than one, and emerging into leadership roles that encourage collaboration shapes the school climate and culture. Students learn best in environments where there are teacher leaders who create an environment of mutual respect between administration, staff, students, and parents. Below are two examples of work I have done in ECI 508 (Teachers as Leaders) that elaborate on the need for teacher leadership and how everyone wins when teacher leaders are rewarded and leadership roles are supportive.
